Dr Harris is believed to have been the last person to come out of the cave, and his incredible efforts drew special praise from the leader of the rescue mission, acting Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osotanakorn.
“(The Australians) have been a big help, especially the doctor,” Osotanakorn told 9NEWS reporter Ben Avery.
“Very good. The best – not good – the very best.”
Dr Harris went into the caves on each of the days to individually sign off on each of the boys’ health before they were guided to safety.
The 53-year-old expert cave diver and anesthetist from Adelaide knows exactly how tragically these dangerous scenarios can play out, after the death of his friend Agnes Milowka, 29, who lost touch with a group of divers in Tank Cave, South Australia, in 2011.
Dr Harris was specially asked to be part of the rescue mission in Thailand because of his medical expertise and previous experience.
